House Wiring Assistance to be Provided through JSIF
[Kingston, November 13, 2023] — In a partnership that aims to brighten the lives of many communities, the JPS, Ministry of Energy and the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF), have joined forces to ensure that reliable and safe electricity supply reaches underserved and off-grid communities across the island. This will be made possible through the revamped Rural Electrification Programme (REP).
Discussions on the project began in the third quarter of this year, with steps presently being taken toward implementation. An all-island tour is currently underway to determine the communities to be included in the Project, as well as to plan the necessary pole line work.
JPS through the REP will undertake the critical role of installing the pole line infrastructure as well as provide guidance on the sign-up process and carry out energy management education. JSIF will undertake the house wiring and certification of houses.
Senior Vice President of Customer Experience and Commercial at JPS, Pia Baker, says “we believe that everyone deserves access to electricity. And we are delighted to partner with the Energy Ministry and JSIF, to help make that happen. This partnership underscores a shared commitment to uplifting communities and improving their quality of life.”
JPS has been carrying out multiple projects over the years, in an effort to connect communities to the grid. One recent JPS/GOJ collaboration, saw residents in communities such as Stand Pipe in St. Andrew, Steer Town in St. Ann and sections of Annotto Bay in St. Mary, benefitting from house wiring and electrification.
This new collaborative effort is expected to benefit several persons in time for Christmas and the New Year.
