JPS Restoration Activities Slowed by Continuing Rain and Unsafe Conditions Caused by Tropical Storm Rafael

(Kingston – Tuesday, November 5, 2024 / 6:00pm) JPS teams are continuing their efforts to restore power supply to customers affected by outages caused by Tropical Storm Rafael, but are being hampered by heavy rains and strong winds still affecting sections of the island.

“Consistent with the projections of the Meteorological Service, we have been seeing persistent rainfall resulting in flooding and landslides in several communities. In some instances, our crews have had to stop working because of impassable roads,” explained JPS President & CEO, Hugh Grant.

Grant indicated that despite the proactive actions taken by JPS to deploy teams and resources to facilitate safe and quick responses, the Company was experiencing delays as the storm continues to move through the island.

“Projections from the Met Office are that rain will continue in sections of the island throughout the night and into tomorrow, which could cause further outages and delay restoration. However, we commit to working as long as it is safe to do so. We ask our customers for patience and understanding,” he said.

JPS is urging customers to take every precaution to stay safe. “Exercise caution when driving on wet and flooded roadways. Do not go near fallen poles and downed power lines,” Grant stressed. “Report these to JPS using the MyJPS Mobile App, our social media channels @myjpsonline, or by calling us at 888-225-5577 / 888-CALL JPS,” he advised.
