(Kingston, July 18, 2023) On Wednesday July 12, 2023 Jamaica hit its highest demand ever, for electricity. This, as the JPS recorded a peak demand of 692 Megawatts, up from 675 megawatts the month before. Electricity usage has been trending up, as customers have been using more fans and air conditioning to beat the heat.
“This significant increase in electricity usage is likely to continue as temperatures remain high this summer,” noted Director of Corporate Communications, Winsome Callum. “We are however seeking to help our customers to manage their electricity costs, by sharing useful information on energy efficiency as well as enjoyable ideas to keep themselves and the family cool this summer,” she continued.
The Communications Director also took the opportunity to encourage Jamaicans to do their part to create a sustainable and cool environment. “Here at JPS we are a huge supporter of maintaining a sustainable environment. We want to encourage everyone to plant more trees, especially in the city where there is far less greenery; use cooler construction materials where feasible; and make environmentally friendly buildings that allow for the passage of cool air and sunlight.”
Experts are unclear as to how long this historic heat wave, which is being experienced globally, will last.
