Scrap Metal Thieves Strike, Causing Outage in Section of Hope Pastures
Thieves, appearing to be after copper wiring, broke into a JPS substation serving the Hope Pastures community in St. Andrew. The act of vandalism saw high voltage and other cables being cut – causing some residents in the community to be without power supply since Tuesday night. JPS teams have been carrying out work to repair the damage and restore supply to the affected customers as soon as possible.
The matter has been reported to the police for further investigation. The Company is taking this very seriously and is saddened that its customers in Hope Pastures are experiencing disruption due to the perpetrators’ actions. JPS is also warning would-be thieves that persons have been electrocuted in the past, in an effort to steal copper wires.
The Company remains committed to strengthening the reliability of its systems, and is again appealing to persons to desist from tampering with the network.
