Residents in Melbrook Heights and Marverly to Benefit from Major JPS Infrastructure Upgrades
-More Regularization Targetted
July 30, 2021
Residents of Melbrook Heights Phase 2 in Harbour View, St. Andrew and Marverly in Kingston, are set to benefit from JPS infrastructure upgrades. Under the Company’s Community Renewal arm, the work being undertaken will provide safer and more reliable electricity supply to the communities. The project is also encouraging regularization by bringing more people onto the grid legally. The new systems for these communities will be complete by September of this year, and have the benefit of prepaid capability.
“We are very pleased with the work being done for our customers in both Marverly and Melbrook Heights Phase 2. JPS’ priority is keeping users of electricity safe and giving them access to reliable supply. The upgrades in these two areas will help us to achieve these targets, while increasing the number of legal customers on the grid,” said Ramsay McDonald, Senior Vice President of Customer Services at JPS.
JPS is investing approximately US$905,000 or approximately J$140M in its capital infrastructure in both communities. The Company is aiming to add 250 new customers to the already 521 legal customers in Marverly, and another 150 to the existing 235 paying customers in Melbrook Phase 2.
With very high levels of theft in Marverly and Phase 2 of Melbrook Heights, the infrastructure upgrades will remove existing illegal connections and, significantly reduce the likelihood of illegal connections.
The JPS Community Renewal Programme which was first established in 2014, has been successful in converting thousands of households to legitimate electricity usage in communities in Kingston, St. Andrew, St. Catherine and St. James. JPS continues to pledge its commitment to, not just providing electricity, but contributing to national development.
